The Mazda CX-30 Continues Its Ascent with its Second Model Year

Despite debuting only a year ago, the Mazda CX-30 has nevertheless dazzled Scarborough customers with its combination of athletic handling, comfortable ride, and spacious and upscale interior.

The 2021 model year welcomes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration as standard, and there's now the option of a turbocharged engine. Portland shoppers can choose from this subcompact crossover's 2.5 S, Select, Preferred, and Premium trim levels.

Performance

For a subcompact vehicle, the 2021 Mazda CX-30 wields more engine power than other entries in its class. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine under its hood produces 186 horsepower, and it is joined with a six-speed automatic transmission that shifts perfectly to the powerplant's capabilities. As acceleration-ready as this 2.5-liter engine is, you can get a lot more with the optional turbocharged version of this engine, which pumps out 227 horsepower when using regular gasoline and 250 horsepower when using premium fuel. Although front-wheel drive is standard, South Portland customers can opt for an all-wheel drivetrain for maximizing road grip.

With its relatively small size, the Mazda CX-30 is very maneuverable, and the steering is tight and sharp. Old Orchard Beach customers should go with the top-level Premium model if they want paddle shifters for more convenient gear shifting.

Interior

A five-seater, the 2021 Mazda CX-30 provides 20.2 cubic feet of standard cargo volume between the rear seats and the liftgate. Notably, this space is designed with a low lift-in height and a wide hatch opening. As a result, the cargo volume is more functional than that of other subcompact crossovers.

The Select trim gains a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and front-seat heating with eight-way power adjustability and a memory system on the driver's seat appears on the Preferred model. If you want a peak luxury feel on the CX-30, go straight for the Premium, which stands out with leather seat upholstery.

Comfort and Convenience

In addition to the previously mentioned Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functions, 2021 Mazda CX-30 provides eight speakers, an HD Radio transceiver, voice recognition, Bluetooth hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, a Wi-Fi hotspot for 4G LTE Internet access, two USB ports for hooking up mobile devices, an 8.8-inch screen for displaying information, and a rotary controller for executing infotainment functions. Remote keyless entry is present for access to the cabin by pressing the key fob button rather than injecting the ignition key into the door lock.

At the Select trim level, controls are placed on the front passenger side in addition to the driver's side to create a dual-zone automatic climate control system. A button is placed next to the steering wheel to start the engine without an ignition key, and a smart key system in place of remote keyless entry boosts access convenience by simply having the key fob on you. Mazda adds a power moonroof at the Preferred trim level to let in air and light when needed around the Westbrook area. Exclusive to the Premium is a navigation system, power activation for hands-free opening of the liftgate, a few months of SiriusXM Radio, and a 12-speaker Bose sound system.

Safety

For driver assistance, the 2021 Mazda CX-30 comes with adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam technology, a rearview camera, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, and low-speed automatic emergency braking. Eight airbags are added for crash protection. Mazda adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert at the Select trim level for additional driver assistance. Only the Premium has a head-up display and an adaptive front-lighting system.
